ABOUT THE PROJECT

The conversation behind the microphone.

Berlin x London im Dialog: Urban Voices on Democracy.

Berlin x London im Dialog: Urban Voices on Democracy – two democratic metropolises shaped by different political traditions, yet connected by remarkably similar questions about how we live together.

How can we create better educational opportunities for everyone? How do we ensure that housing remains affordable? And how much influence do the people who shape the everyday life of their cities actually have over the political decisions that affect their lives and their future?

These questions concern both cities, yet the answers emerge from different historical, political and social circumstances. That is precisely why it is worth taking a closer look and listening to one another. Learning from each other does not mean simply adopting someone else's answers. It means first understanding why some initiatives bring about meaningful change while others never quite get off the ground. What conditions encourage constructive, forward-looking political dialogue? What can we learn from successes as well as failures? And what new possibilities might these insights open up for life in our own cities and beyond?

This is where "Berlin x London im Dialog: Urban Voices on Democracy", a difgl series funded by the Berlin Senate Chancellery as part of the Berlin–London city partnership, comes in. Our live podcast series brings together people from academia, politics, public administration and civil society. Together, we explore what connects these two cities, where they differ and what insights we can gain from their respective experiences. Academic perspectives meet the lived experience of those actively shaping public life. After all, political decisions affect not only institutions and structures, but above all the people whose everyday lives they shape.

Through four public events organised in cooperation with the Berlin State Centre for Political Education, we give these different perspectives a voice. The discussions are recorded live and released as podcast episodes in English and German. In this way, the exchange does not end with a single conversation. Instead, it becomes an invitation to reflect further on the possibilities for political participation in Berlin and London, to bring our own experiences into the dialogue and to contribute to the discussion about the future of our cities.

Guiding us through this live podcast series are filmmaker Sabine Pusch and public policy advisor Dr Robert Keeling, already familiar to listeners from the difgl podcast "LondonBerlinDemocracy".

Sabine Pusch is a German-British documentary filmmaker whose work includes productions for the BBC and Channel 4. She brings extensive journalistic experience and a particular eye for the people, their stories and the social developments behind political debates.

Robert Keeling holds a PhD in physics and is an expert in public policy. With more than 20 years of experience in British government and international affairs, he brings first-hand knowledge of political decision-making and the institutional structures behind it.

Together, they guide us through the conversations, challenge familiar perspectives and bring different points of view into dialogue. That is not always easy! What matters is understanding one another better and exploring together which approaches can help advance democratic life in both cities.

"Berlin x London im Dialog: Urban Voices on Democracy" is a production of "difgl – German Institute for the Good Life", building on the German-British exchange established through our existing podcast series *LondonBerlinDemocracy*.
